Laitinen - The next big thing from Finland
The Finnish designer duo Laitinen have managed to keep a pretty low profile but from time to time the name pops up on fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle. For most people they are still quite unknown, even though their collection was presented at the Milan fashion week last year and they been awarded at the Hyeres Festival in 2006. These siblings (sister and brother Anna and Tuomas Laitinen) have the kind of aestethics that appeal to my minimalist and androgyne taste: odd cuts, dark colors, timeless designs, and an unisex look - something more designers should definitely pursue towards in the future.
Whereas most young Finnish designers make quite playful and funny clothing, Laitinen's desings are more mature and high fashion. It's a pity they are anti-commercial; they lack an official website and their clothes are not advertised or sold anywhere online, only in selected boutiques. The quality should be outstanding, as the production still happens in Finland.

I can't wait what will become of Laitinen since they have all the needed elements to make it big one day. I guess we just have to wait and see. In the meanwhile we can admire these beautiful images of their designs from the past collections.

Hei, tiedätkö, missä maassa nuo valmistetaan? :)
Black is so totally beautiful!
p.s. if you wanna know/see more of Laitinen i'd recommend checking out A Shaded View on Fashion's archives, since Diane Pernet is a friend of the siblings, and a fan too, obviously.
Cafe noir: Mulla on samat intressit. ;)
Tahtoisin kaikki nuo punapäisen mallin vaatteet!
Anonymous: Thank you for the heads up, I'll check it out right away!:)
Haa, I knew you must like this design duo! I love them as well and I would like to see them going far with their designs. I'm also little bit confused why they don't have an official website, I just think it's a must have no matter how anti-commercial someone wants to be.
Ja väri on hieno, very chic and glamour.
Tahtoo noi kaikki!
Anonymous: Luin ja pohjasin siihen osittain mun tekstini. :)
Cafe noir: Ne on kyllä aivan ihanat! ;)
they COULD be the next big thing from finland;
everything is going for them. milan fashion week/central saint martin's graduate/coverage in elle and vogue? they're obviously absolutely talented as designers.
but come on! despite the aforementioned accolades the collections lack that kind of WOW that a newly established designer needs. fair enough, the collection is inspired by melancholy and romance, but that isn't going to set them apart.
their show at milan fashion week? the clothes were fantastic, yes.good construction and colour. but the actual show?
the music and general tempo of the show was unbeliiiieeevably SLOW.it wasn't interesting to watch.they don't call it a fashion "show" for nothing! (and as their first show....?)
obviously there's potential, but they won't make it unless they do something a bit more controversial.nevertheless,am curious to see more from them!
They DO advertise :D Ok ok it was only an one page in this cool magazine titled Dossier but still :P
Oh and I've heard they will no longer do stuff for women, I hope it's not true though =(
Anonymous: I agree that they need to step up their game if they want to make it in the future. I guess us Finns are so modest that we don't want to make anything a big fuss. That's probably why the Swedes are so successful in fashion business and we are not. Hopefully they will do something about it because there is tons of potential. :)
Indie: Hehhe, yep, they could advertise a little more though. And let's hope that quitting the women's line is just pure rumor..
:)
i guess it helps to be so well-connected, they seem to know a lot of people. i was an exchange student last year at the school where tuomas laitinen teaches. he's quite hard on his students, but otherwise ok. they're showing menswear in milan next june, so probably there's no women's pieces.
