If I had a photograph of you, it's something to remind me, I wouldn't spend my life just wishing

Some of you may have noticed the Canon banner on the right column of this blog and might have wondered what is it exactly doing there. I can now reveal that Canon has sponsored and given me the EOS 500D camera in exchange for the banner, so a noticeable change in image quality should follow on this blog. I want to remind you I'm still learning how to use it after my precious G9 but based on the first touches, the 500D fills all my requirements, and has gotten me truly excited about photography. It also has the video option, so perhaps a video or two might be popping on here at some point, well, as soon as I get more guts...

My Canon 500D came with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lense but I'm thinking of upgrading into a bit more powerful one (faster, wider apertude, medium size tele), perhaps to the prime 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.8. If you guys can recommend me which one is better for full-body shots with smooth bokeh, I would appreciate it a lot!

Words can't describe how excited I am about playing with this new toy, I'ill definitely take it everywhere I go. I'm also happy that I can finally put all the theory I've learned at the photo school into practice. With this camera things just turned up a notch here on Fashion Flux, and I couldn't be more happy about it.

Thank you Canon, can't wait for the improved results!

Meillä on Canon EOS 50D kamerassa ollut eniten käytössä 50mm f/1.8 -objektiivi (josta siis parempi versio tuo f/1.4 siis on), jolla on kyllä tullut varsin hyviä kuvia.

Onnea kameralla harjoittelemiseen!

Wow you are so lucky, I need a new camera but can't afford one like this. I will be trying a normal Canon point and shoot camera, so hopefully things will be better picturewise soon.

Make it easy and get a 24-70 2.8L ;)

Im using a 50mm 1.8. Its cheap, and fun to shoot with. I think you should checkout the 1.8 before going after 1.4. I didnt think it was worth it. better to buy something cheap and then save so you can get a prime lens like the 24-70.

Another fun lense I use is the 10-22 mm wide angle lense...that one is really fun to use, but maybe not so practical for taking pics of outfits =)

I am so jealous, Canon should provide me with a small pocket size cam ;PP I hope you enjoy your new camera and the future lens, what ever it will be! ^^

1.8 is much cheaper yes, but it's also more plastic-like, people have been saying it's not as sturdy or durable as the 1.4, which is built a bit better. Surely 1.8 is a very good choice aswell anyway, but for example I myself am not too optimistic on the saving for a prime lens part, so I just went for the 1.4 and take the most out of that one :P I refuse to feel bad about it ;) I'm also enjoying the two extra aperture stops, allthough it's not a hugely huge difference :P

I would definitely pick the 50 mm for that purpose, considering the same optic myself. It is also delightfully compact.

Oikeastaan kyllä yksi juttu, jota olen joutunut miettimään kun kuvaan itse omia asukuvia blogiin: laaja syväterävyysalue olisi itse asiassa aika ehdoton aikalaukaisulla kuvatessa.

Sehän vastaa näihin Canonin ns. crop-runkoihin kiinnitettynä itse asiassa 80 mm objektiivia normaalirungossa - eli zoomia on melko paljon --> kokovartalokuvaa varten pitää päästä melko kauas --> sisätiloissa seinät tulevat äkkiä vastaan. Puntaroin itse lähinnä 28 millisen ja 50 millisen välillä.

"so you can get a prime lens like the 24-70."

24-70 is NOT a prime, it's a zoom lens.

anna-maria:
18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is plenty enough for your simple wardrobe/today's look-shots.
You will have no use at all for large apertures such as 1.4, 1.8, 2.0, even 2.8 when doing those, since depth of field will be too shallow even from enough distance to fit in a whole person with 50 or 85mm lens in a 1.6x crop sensor.
For you I'd recommend practising with the kit lens first and then consider 35mm prime if you're so inclined to have f/1.4 or 1.8.

Right. I meant to say premium but thinking in camera terms it came out prime, which is as you said not correct since 24-70 most definitely is a zoom lens. A premium one =)
